Economic Development for Businesses that Provide Family Wage Jobs
I will continue to emphasize and participate in coordinating the economic efforts for Gresham that will generate community wealth, foster regional links, support quality education options and create a balanced and diverse industry base that provides livable wage jobs and live/work communities to reduce the need for commuting.
Growth in our economy will be fueled by a combination of emerging businesses capturing the knowledge-based economy, including a sustainable and green job strategy; the active retention and expansion of our existing business base with recognition of our important small businesses and the emphasis on the "buy local" slogan; and encouraging both traded sector industries and the formation of clusters for developing offshoot industries.
While I am still concerned about the negative image that pervades our efforts and is embellished by the media in commenting on the public safety problems in our community, I feel more companies will locate and remain because of our growing skilled and creative workforce, the amount of land that can be developed and the number of attractive business assistance financial programs such as enterprise zones, strategic investment programs, new Industry grants, storefront improvements and apartment rehabilitation that are available.
