Developing city-wide emergency preparedness programs
Having had a background in emergency preparedness, when I was a member of the National Defense Executive Reserve Corps, I was always concerned about how our city, and surrounding jurisdictions, were prepared and would react and cooperate in the event of a major emergency.
I was pleased to learn that Gresham is well organized to coordinate governmental and non-governmental agencies, educational institutions and Federal agencies to provide disaster preparedness, training and prevention information to citizens throughout the community. I encourage everyone to use the City services to better prepare themselves, their families and neighborhoods for such emergencies.
Basic steps can include such as organizing an emergency supply kit, making a personal prepared exit plan, becoming informed about current threats, and getting involved by connecting with your neighbors through Neighborhood Associations. These activities create a culture of preparedness and can save lives and avoid panic situations.
Structured training is also available through the Community Emergency Response Training (CERT ) program. This seven week course will help citizens manage utilities, put out fires, provide basic medical aid, search for and rescue victims safely and put together emergency supply kits. For more information on these programs please contact myself or Kellie Landavazo at 503-618-2567.
