Promoting Greater Responsiveness to Citizen's Needs and Understanding of Local Government
When I ran for Council in 2004 I quickly realized, in talking with people during the campaign phase, that most citizens do not participate in the decisions that affect their lives in the cities where they live. As a result there is often a lack of trust and understanding between them and city staff and elected officials.
I am a strong believer that local governments, community organizations and public agencies make better decisions and have a greater positive impact on transparency when they increase the frequency, diversity, geographic coverage and level of engagement of its community residents.
With this goal in mind, my colleagues Councilors Bennett and Strathern and I have have worked closely over the past year to reduce and restructure the existing fourteen Council Citizen Advisory Committees (CCAC's) into five strategic areas. These are Public Safety, Natural Resources and Sustainability, Planning Commission, Finance and Citizen Involvement. The role of these Committees have also been expanded into sub-committees for such roles as Tree Preservation, Parks and Recreation, Historic Resources, Transportation issues, Skate Board Park design etc.
Our recent 2007 Citizen Survey revealed that more residents are becoming interested in getting engaged in City volunteer opportunities (from 28% to 39%). I encourage your participation in joining one of our advisory committees. It could mean you devoting your time to at least one evening meeting a month for a valuable service to your community.
Please contact Connie Otto at the City 503-618-2360 or myself if we send you an application or can answer any questions.
As mentioned earlier, our goal is to have City Wide participation from a broad diversified audience. Of particular interest is to involve more youth as they offer new viewpoints and have valuable skills and abilities and will represent the future leadership for our community.
