Road Maintenance and Traffic Congestion More than one million additional people are expected to live in the Metro Region in the next 30 years. With the rapidly decreasing amount of land within the existing Urban Boundary on the West Side it is apparent that we will be the recipient of a good portion of this anticipated growth.
Since the State has not increased the gas tax since 1993 and it appears unlikely the legislature will take any action in the near future it is evident that additional funds will have to be raised locally to repair and reconstruct our streets. This may have to be in the form of local gas taxes, similar to those seven other Oregon jurisdictions have imposed, or by a local transportation utility fee.
